Website grants

Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust's woodland grants support the creation of new native broadleaf woodlands, hedgerow and landscape trees in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Nidderdale AONB.

Thinking of planting a new woodland?

Working with partners including Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, Woodland Trust and the Forestry Commission we can provide advice on woodland planting, design and specification, help to complete a woodland grant application, identify other potential funding opportunities and recommend contractors to carry out the work for you.

Our grants support the creation of new woodlands, hedgerow and landscape trees in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Nidderdale AONB. Applications from outside this area will also be considered if they meet funding criteria.

Woodland grant applications

To be eligible for funding your proposed woodland should:

  • Significantly conserve, enhance or add to the natural heritage
  • Be accessible to the general public or be clearly visible from a public right of way
  • Be supported by the local community.

The main focus of your application should be the planting of native broadleaf woodland, however we may also be able to fund other additional project elements, such as planting non-native species or hedgerows, providing they meet eligibility criteria around biodiversity and conservation. Grants can also cover the costs involved in establishing a new woodland, including the supply and planting of trees and guards, fencing to exclude stock, gates to allow access and initial weeding costs.

How to apply

We are now taking applications for planting in winter 2022-23. To find out more please submit a proposal form (below) in the first instance to our Woodland Officer Chris Lodge chris.lodge@ydmt.org You can also contact Chris to discuss your ideas on 015242 51002.

Restoring our native woodlands

25 years ago YDMT joined forces with other organisations to expand tree cover across the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding areas. Since then, we’ve supported the planting of more than 1.5 million native broadleaf trees.
